Make Your Own Laundry Soap

Learning how to make laundry soap is very simple if you really want to take the time to learn. Not only will it save you money but you can use this amazing product to add a little extra cash to your pocket. There are many people out there who would love to purchase homemade laundry soap because they don’t have the time to make it themselves.

We have been making our own laundry soap for about 5 years now and we love it. It is extremely inexpensive and it works fantastic. Plus it smells amazing. Let’s go over two simple ways to make your own laundry soap.

Finding The Ingredients You’ll Need
You can find new 5-gallon buckets pretty cheap at Lowe's or Home Depot. Make sure you buy a lid for your bucket. They are sold separately for around a dollar. Of course, if you already have a 5-gallon bucket handy, recycle it and save yourself a few dollars.

Fels Naptha soap is usually available in the laundry department at Wal-mart or Target, but if you cannot find Fels Naptha, you can use Zote, which seems to be more readily available. This should cost you around a dollar.

The 20 Mule Team Borax is usually found in your local Wal-mart or Target as well. If you cannot find it, ask the department manager to special order you some. Borax is pretty inexpensive, usually around $3 for a box of around 4.5 lbs. You only need to use 1 cup per 5-gallons of liquid laundry soap.

Arm and Hammer Washing Soda is also found in the laundry aisle. Make sure you get the Washing Soda and not the Baking Soda which is found in the baking aisle. Baking soda will not work for this recipe. The Washing Soda is also inexpensive, again, around $3 for a box of about 3.5 lbs. And you'll only need a cup per 5 gallons.

Liquid Laundry Soap
Making liquid laundry soap does take a little longer to make compared to the powdered kind. But you can make enough to last you a year, sometimes longer, depending on how many loads of laundry you do. Let’s go over some of the things you’ll need.

Supplies

  • 5 Gallon Bucket with Lid
  • Large Pot
  • Cheese Grater
  • Old Laundry Soap Container or Gallon Jugs
  • Funnel
  • Large Cup

  • Ingredients

  • Fels Naptha Soap
  • Borax
  • Arm & Hammer Washing Soda
  • Water

  • How to Make Liquid Laundry Soap
Follow these easy steps to make liquid laundry soap.

Step #1 – Start by grating 1 bar of Fels Naptha Soap with the cheese grater.

Step #2 – Put your grated soap into your pot and cover it with about an inch of hot water. Cook on low until all the soap is completely melted. Stir frequently; you don’t want it to burn on the bottom.

Step #3 – Add 1 cup borax and 1 cup washing soda to the pot. Add more water (about 2 cups) and stir on low until the powders are completely dissolved.

Step #4 – Remove your mix from the heat and pour into your 5 gallon bucket. Fill the remainder of your 5 gallon bucket with hot water. Stir as you go.

Step #5 – Let the mixture sit overnight to cool. The next day, you will find that your laundry soap has congealed in the bucket. It’s consistency is similar to Jell-o. All you need to do now is squish it around through your fingers until it is a uniform lumpy texture.

Step #6 – Take your old laundry soap container and place the funnel overtop. Use a large cup to pour liquid laundry soap into container. And that’s it!

Use the same amount that you normally use when washing your laundry. Now let’s go over how to make powdered laundry soap.
